OTTAWA – The 16U Ottawa Knights sure enjoyed being at home on the weekend, sweeping four straight games in Quebec midget league baseball action.
Saturday, the Knights swept Montreal NDG by scores of 3-1 and 13-3. Sunday, the bats stayed hot in wins of 15-1 and 5-1 over Valleyfield . The Knights are now 7-2 in league play and tied for second place. Overall (league-tourney-exhibition) Ottawa has an 18-7 record.
In the 3-1 win Saturday over NDG, pitchers Patrick Medeiros (W 6-2) and Patrick Derouin combined on a five-hitter. Derouin threw 2 2/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Ottawa scored three in the first inning and surrendered just one NDG run, in the second. Landen Moore belted a two-run single, Jamie Wilcox walked and scored on a wild pitch for the other. Rizz Mendoza had two hits.
In the 13-3 victory, Ottawa pounded 16 hits, including Adrian Yuen’s three-run inside the park homer, a shot down the third-base line. Thinking it was foul, the Montreal outfielder didn’t chase it hard at first, so Yuen raced around the bases to beat the relay to home. Pitcher Landen Moore (4-0) got the win with four innings of four-hit ball. CF Dillon James scored four runs; Medeiros whacked three singles. 3B Ryan Atkinson had the defensive play of the game, leaping to snare a hard line drive in the fifth.
Ottawa struck for an astonishing 11 runs in the first inning vs. Valleyfield , making an easy winner of P Dave Bell (2-0), who gave up three hits in three innings before Steve Milks came in to finish up. Dom Heallis hit two doubles and drove in three runs, while Moore , Milks and Langlois each had two RBIs.
In their final game of the weekend, the 5-1 win, Ottawa again rode a big inning to victory. The Knights scored all five runs in the third. Yuen hit a two-run single, while Wilcox and Derouin added RBI singles. Heallis (3-1) got the win on the mound going three innings, with Ryan Atkinson tossing four strong innings to mop up.
